Major Open Cut Coal Mine Expansion

The Project
Enthalpy was engaged to provide Owners’ Project Management Services to lead a mega project for the development an open cut mine that was drawing out up to 15 million tonnes of coal per annum using truck and shovel mining methods.

The project involved:

  • Construction of a rail loop and train load out facilities
  • Development of borrow pits in box-cut mining areas to provide fill for bulk earthworks and the construction of haul roads
  • Procurement of new mining equipment
  • Engineering and construction of infrastructure facilities including coal preparation plant and export coal facilities


The Assignment
Enthalpy assisted the Feasibility Study Team with the finalisation of the Capital Cost Estimate, Project Schedule and Project Execution Plan prior to owner full investment decision and Board approval. Enthalpy led the tender documentation, tender evaluation and contract award process for EPCM Services.

Enthalpy provided a fully integrated owner’s team, across disciplines ranging from project control and procurement to safety.


The Outcome
Infrastructure facilities including the two-module coal preparation plant and export coal facilities were engineered and constructed under an EPCM Contractor arrangement and reached full production 6 months ahead of schedule while the project was delivered under budget.

The Project was delivered within the approved budget of $A770M.
